Year Nine Options 2020
Schools have been closed since March 2020 and although we may see Year Ten and Twelve students before the end of the summer term, we do not yet know when we might next see Year Nine.
We must plan accordingly and we are now at the stage of the year where students need to choose their final options before starting online GCSE and Technical Award courses on Monday 1st June 2020.
OUR GCSE CURRICULUM
All students will study English, Maths, Science and core PE and one of History or Geography. The table shows the Year 10 curriculum, with the number of hours per fortnight spent studying each subject.
TYPES OF QUALIFICATION
As well as finding out about the content of subjects, students should find out how subjects are taught and assessed. There are two types of qualification at Key Stage 4:
- GCSE 9 – 1
- Technical Awards
GCSEs are assessed primarily through final examination.
- GCSEs are designed for a two-year period of study
- GCSEs are linear, so students will take all of their exams at the end of the course
- GCSEs do not usually have coursework or controlled assessment
- GCSEs have a grading scale from 9 to 1. The comparison with the old A* – G system can be seen in the table opposite
This short video explains the new GCSE grading system.
Technical Awards take a more practical approach and are assessed through coursework and or controlled assessments alongside the external exam component. Technical Awards equate to GCSE grades as follows:
- Distinction* 8.5
- Distinction 7
- Merit 5.5
- Pass 4
OPTION CHOICES
Students should spend time thinking and talking to their family about which subjects are the best choices for them. Students can talk to their teachers by e-mail and their addresses can be found here: https://chauncyschool.com/contacts/
Students should choose subjects that they enjoy, believe they can succeed in, and should think about whether a subject is important for their future.
