Year 7 Football – District Cup Champions
An excellent first season for our Year Seven girls’ football team saw qualification to the final of the District Cup, which was played on Monday, on the astroturf at Presdales School.
A dominant first-half performance from the yellow and black team set the tone, with Chauncy taking the lead inside the opening two minutes thanks to a well-worked goal from Elisha. From that point on, the Chauncy team controlled possession effectively, moved the ball around the pitch with confidence, and created several promising chances, showing real composure and attacking intent throughout the half.
The second half presented a different challenge, as Broxbourne came out with energy and intent, putting the Chauncy defence under severe pressure. The girls remained organised and defended superbly, with the whole team tracking back, making decisive tackles and blocks, and preventing a talented Broxbourne side from getting a foothold in this important game.
Excellent communication, discipline and teamwork were observed in a tense final ten minutes, as the Chauncy team managed a Broxbourne onslaught, with goalkeeper Florence making a series of excellent saves to maintain the lead.
As the purple side pushed on in attack, they left gaps in their defence, and Chauncy capitalised on this space, counterattacking with quick passing and direct running. The Broxbourne goalkeeper managed to force a series of corners to prevent Chauncy from extending their lead until Cora picked up a loose ball in midfield. She strode confidently towards the edge of the box and unleashed a thunderbolt that defied the efforts of the diving Broxbourne goalkeeper, hitting the roof of the net and sending the Chauncy team and their enthusiastic supporters into rapturous celebrations. The final whistle blew shortly afterwards, concluding an entertaining cup final and securing another trophy for the Chauncy cabinet.
Cora was named Player of the Match, but congratulations to the whole squad and coach Alice Berry for an excellent team performance.
Marvellous.
