BACK TO SCHOOL
Dear Parent/Carer,
I am writing to inform you of an important update to our procedure regarding punctuality to school, which will come into effect after the half-term break, starting Monday 2nd November.
Why we are updating our procedure?
We are seeing an increase in the number of students arriving late to school. At The Chauncy School we believe good attendance and punctuality are essential for every student’s success. Being on time is crucial for your child’s learning, helps them settle into the school day and demonstrates respect for both their own education and others’ learning.
Importantly, morning registration allows us to know exactly which students are on the school site each day, which is essential for:
– Safeguarding purposes – ensuring we can account for every student in our care and fulfil our duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children.
– Fire safety – having accurate information about who is in the building in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Our Expectations:
As part of our student Code of Conduct, we expect all students to:
– Attend school every day on time
– Arrive on time to all lessons, ready to learn
– Sign in/out at reception if arriving late or leaving early
New Late to School Procedure – Key information
Students have been informed of this change during form time and understand the new expectations.
To support excellent punctuality, we are introducing the following procedure for students who arrive to school late.
Students must be in their period 1 lesson by 8.50am.
The consequences for lateness are as follows:
• First late: Same-day lunch detention
• Three lates in one week: After-school detention
• Persistent lateness: Heads detention on a Saturday morning (2 hours)
All detentions are non-negotiable and must be attended. You will be notified if your child receives a detention.
How can you support your child:
– Ensure your child arrives on the school site by 8.45am at the latest, so they have sufficient time to reach their period 1 lesson and be ready to learn by 8.50am.
– Discuss with your child the importance of punctuality and the impact it has on their learning.
– Reinforce our school’s expectations and talk through these changes before the start of the new half-term.
– Contact the school as soon as possible if there are exceptional circumstances that may affect your child’s punctuality. We recognise that some students may have specific needs or circumstances and we will work with families on an individual basis where necessary.
Thank you for your continued support.
