PSHRE

Personal, Social, Health, Relationship and Economic (PSHRE) education is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

Our PSHRE curriculum allows all age students to explore a range of topics that extend beyond the usual academic subjects at Chauncy School. Students study and reflect on those areas of life which affect us all, developing knowledge, skills understanding, resilience and reflection. The PSHRE curriculum is based around the PSHE Association Model for key stage 3, 4 and 5 schemes of learning. The PSHRE spiral and progressive curriculum allows students to revisit topics or themes several times throughout KS3, 4 and 5. The complexity or difficulty of the topic or theme increases with each revisit.

We promote personal wellbeing and development through our form tutor system and a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health, Relationships and Economic (PSHRE) education programme. PSHRE education is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.
The model covers all the statutory requirements for their phase, within a comprehensive PSHRE education programme, fully meeting Department for Education’s statutory guidance on Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education.
We use the Gatsby 8 Pillars to inform our careers programme, using the software Unifrog as an integral part of our programme of study.
PSHRE education is taught as a core subject in years 7-12 and thematically throughout the school through dedicated days. PSHRE is delivered on a carousel basis in Years 7 and 8 and as discrete weekly lessons in Years 9-12 (1 hour each week). In addition, we plan drop down days, dedicated to core themes, with external speakers and selected staff delivering sessions. Post 16 have their PSHRE and careers delivered through a dedicated lesson and are part of the drop down days.  PSHRE is also delivered in form times, in assemblies and across the wider school curriculum within subjects.

PSHRE is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and governing body. All PSHRE teaching takes place in a safe learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values.

As a school community, we are committed to working in partnership with parents; recent parental feedback has indicated that the overwhelming majority of parents continue to be highly supportive of the relationships and sex education programme.

Assemblies and Tutor Time are also used to explore key themes and messages. These are sometimes reactive, and targeted to specific year groups, or key groups, based on safeguarding logs and patterns of behaviour emerging.

Your child and their peers will be taking part in sessions which will focus on the relationships and sex education (RSE) aspect of this PSHE programme. The content of RSE sessions is outlined clearly, by year group in the Scheme of Learning. Students will also have opportunities to ask questions that help prepare them for relationships of all kinds in the modern world.

Key Curriculum Content (please see the PSHRE Learning Journey for further details)

There are three overarching themes taught through age related content, meeting statutory standards for Relationship and Sex Education.
*Health & Well-Being
*Living in The Wider World
*Relationships

In addition, we also cover the core areas of:
*Economic Wellbeing (including careers education)
*Navigating the online world
*Democracy and British Values
*Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education.

The intent of our PSHRE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and ensures that each of our students will understand more about how to play a positive and successful role within our society. Our aim is to support students’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development, prepare and equip them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. Our aim is to provide students with a knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that they face as they grow up. We aim to provide our students with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.
