County Cup Champions
Chauncy School’s Under 16s Boys Football team were deservedly crowned Hertfordshire County Cup champions on Friday night, after a superb 4-2 victory over Katherine Warrington School at Harpenden Town Football Club.
With over 300 spectators in attendance, the atmosphere was electric. Katherine Warrington, a Harpenden school, had a particularly large and loud home support, but the Chauncy fans made themselves heard and supported their team throughout the contest.
The game started at an incredible pace, with both sides playing direct, attacking football.
Chauncy struck first with an excellent individual goal from Archie Honour, weaving past two defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the goal to give the yellows an early lead.
The celebrations didn’t last long as Katherine Warrington responded quickly, equalising within minutes and taking the lead following some excellent work in midfield.
Chauncy didn’t capitulate, however, and kept pressing. A magnificent first-time volley from Ollie Scott, reminiscent of Marco van Basten in the 1988 Euros, had the Chauncy fans dancing in the stands. With the match level at 2-2 at halftime, Coach Kendall’s team talk galvanised the side, and the team in yellow were relentless in the second half, creating wave after wave of attacks on the Katherine Warrington goal.
The Harpenden team tried to play out from the back but were shut down by the Chauncy midfield. They tried to play long, but the Chauncy defence was impenetrable, mounting pressure on the Harpenden defence. The pressure paid off when Jude Stewart turned two defenders and fired an excellent left-footed finish into the top corner to restore Chauncy’s lead.
Shortly afterwards, Finn Cockram sealed the victory, calmly slotting home one-on-one with his left foot, to make it 4-2 and confirm Chauncy School as the 2025 – 26 Hertfordshire County Cup winners.
An incredible achievement, and huge congratulations to Tommy Kendall, the players, their families and the band of enthusiastic supporters, who made this another wonderful evening for Chauncy sports.
